Dental Crowns & Bridges in Geelong

Nothing can beat our natural teeth when it comes to strength and function, however with

  • Trauma
  • Tooth decay
  • Large fillings
  • Root canal treatment and
  • Age related wear and tear

Our teeth may require an artificial crown or “cap” which often is the best way to save your tooth and provide it with more strength.

What is a Dental Crown?

A Dental Crown or “cap” is an artificial crown which is seated on a prepared tooth and replaces the natural crown of your tooth (portion of the tooth which is visible in the mouth).

At Dentists & Doctors in Geelong, we provide our patients with same day porcelain zirconia dental crowns – giving you the best aesthetic results as well as strength and function without multiple dental visits!

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of an artificial tooth which is anchored to your adjacent natural teeth. A dental bridge is often used if a tooth is too badly decayed to save with a crown or has been lost due to trauma.

Your dentist may also recommend a dental implant as another option to replace any missing teeth.

Why do I need a Dental Crown or Bridge?

Our teeth have several vital functions aside from chewing and biting, a missing tooth/ teeth should be replaced for the following reasons-

  1. To improve our overall appearance and smile
  2. To assist us in our speech – a missing tooth makes it difficult to pronounce and make certain sounds such as “TH” “S” “Z”
  3. Prevent stresses to other teeth in the mouth – as they will take on the additional forces from the missing tooth/teeth
  4. To prevent movement and tilting of teeth – this occurs to teeth immediately beside the space of the missing tooth as well as teeth/tooth in the opposing arch.
  5. Maintaining your natural bite
  6. Dental crowns improve your chewing ability – allowing you to eat a wide range of foods and maintain a highly nutritious diet.

How do I take care of my new Dental Crown or Bridge?

Your new dental crown/bridge will need to be taken care of just as you would your natural teeth. This means you will need to brush and floss twice daily in the area, your dentist will demonstrate how to do this following your treatment.

We advise that you avoid eating any hard foods in the area of the new Dental Crown or Bridge for 24 hours immediately after placement. The cement used to bond the dental crown/bridge continues to set and mature for approximately 24 hours to achieve optimum strength.

If you experience mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods do not be concerned. The sensations will improve gradually over the next 4 – 6 weeks.

Please contact us If you experience the following

  • Movement of the crown or bridge
  • Sensitivity to sweet foods/drinks
  • Sensitivity to pressure
  • Breakage or loss of material from dental crown or bridge (very unlikely with Porcelain fused Zirconia crowns)
  • Bad taste in the mouth in the area of your dental crown/bridge
