A composite veneer is a dental filling placed on to the front surface of your tooth to reshape or correct discolouration, malalignment, chips or cracks. Composite veneers are handcrafted and added to the tooth in layers. Each layer is placed, shaped and styled to the appearance which you are wanting to achieve and then hardened with light before the next is applied. When the final shape and colour is achieved, the veneers are polished to give a natural look.
Composite veneers can achieve a great result and are a less expensive option than porcelain veneers or crowns.
Porcelain veneers are very thin layer of ceramic material which is cemented to the front surface of your teeth. They provide great aesthetic results, durable and require minimal maintenance compared to composite veneers.
Your initial appointment with our dentist involves a thorough discussion of what you are hoping to change and improve about your smile. Our dentist then examines your overall dentition to check and ensure you would be suitable candidate for porcelain veneers. We will also go over exactly what we will do to achieve the placement of the veneers.
The next appointment involves shaping the teeth as necessary prior to taking a digital scan. Once the digital scans of your teeth are completed, our dentist will then specifically design and tailor the porcelain veneers to be perfect for you. At the final appointment we cement the veneers onto the front surface of your teeth!

One of the main questions people have about veneers is regarding the difference between composite and porcelain veneers. While they serve mainly the same purpose, there are a lot of differences between the two. Here are just a few, but it is always important to discuss options with your dentist, as they will know which option suits your needs.
Composite Veneers | Porcelain Veneers | |
Correction Capability | Great for correcting minor aesthetic flaws. | Able to correct most aesthetic flaws. |
Durability | Typically last 4-8 years. | Can last 10-15 years, but if damage happens, it will have to be replaced. |
Time of treatment | This option is generally the quickest. The resin is matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth for the most natural look, and can be applied in one visit. | Porcelain veneers typically need two visits. An impression is taken, and the next visit, your porcelain veneers will be bonded to your teeth. |
Aesthetics | Composite veneers look great, and will stain like natural teeth. Composite veneers are reversible, if you were to change your mind at any point. | The translucent properties of porcelain allow the veneer to catch the light, similar to a natural tooth. They are also stain resistant, but porcelain veneers are not reversible. |
Cost | Composite veneers are the cheaper option of the two initially. | Porcelain veneers are initially more expensive, as the placement of porcelain takes more time, expertise and resources. If you break down the cost by how often you would have to replace/repair composite veneers versus porcelain, the cost would come out even over time. |
Wear and tear | Composite veneers are more susceptible to staining and chipping, but if damage happens it can be repaired. | Porcelain veneers do not stain, and are resistant to chipping, but if damage is done, the porcelain veneer will need to be replaced. |
